Isparta workshops … Read more This one is a hand-knotted Turkish Sparta (Isparta) rug from the 1960s, woven in the French Savonnerie style. Isparta workshops were known for adapting Louis XVI and Aubusson designs from the palace carpets of Versailles into wool rugs, and this one has all the hallmarks: the scalloped cream ribbon framing the center field, the little cameo medallions tied up with bows in each corner, Greek key details, gilded acanthus scrolls and big blowsy cabbage roses. It's a lot of design, and it works.

The colors are what make it feel modern. The center field is a saturated teal blue, surrounded by a soft sage green spandrel and a deep emerald green outer border. The roses come in every shade of red, raspberry and pink, with pops of marigold, plum and cream throughout. It reads as very Wes Anderson / grandmillennial and holds its own in a room with mid-century furniture just as well as with antiques.


Condition: Good vintage condition. Even, light wear throughout with a low pile in the sage green sections where the pattern has gone a bit soft and painterly, which is honestly part of the charm. A few small white specks visible in the photos are fiber in the pile and will vacuum out. No holes, tears, repairs or stains. Professionally washed and ready to use.
