Designed by Los Angeles design pioneer John Keal for Modeline in 1963, this ingenious chain-hung floor lamp was conceived as an alternative to the traditional tension pole lamp. Suspended from a ceiling hook while anchored by a weighted base below, the continuous chain creates the elegant illusion of a fixture suspended between floor and ceiling, allowing the lamp to adapt effortlessly to a wide variety of spaces.
The sculptural wooden frame surrounds a softly diffused shade accented with vertical translucent colored panels. When illuminated, these panels gently glow, introducing subtle bands of color that add warmth, depth, and a quiet sense of playfulness to the room. Dual light sockets allow the lamp to cast either a soft ambient glow or brighter illumination depending on the selected setting.
We selected this piece for the way it quietly transforms a room. It is both a lighting fixture and a sculptural presence, embodying the thoughtful ingenuity and craftsmanship that made California modern design so enduring.
Lamp height 30 ¼ in
Lamp Width 10 ¼ in
Maximum height with chain about 111 in
Good vintage condition with light, age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use. Fully functional. Four of the colored panels are missing from one side of the shade, a subtle detail that does not detract from the lamp's overall character or functionality.
