Historically, 19th-century newspapers published massive, multi-section special editions on New Year's Day filled with statistics, boosterism, and lavish illustrations designed to attract settlers, tourists, and capital investors to the region. Privately, with this edition the paper was undoubtedly celebrating 30 years of operation since the San Francisco Chronicle was founded on January 16, 1865, by teenage brothers Charles and Michael H. de Young.

THEME: "California and its Possibilities" draped across the top highlights the late-19th-century boom of West Coast boosterism. Below, a banner reads "The Land of Sunshine, Fruit, and Flowers" to summarize California's inviting climate, agricultural and lifestyle appeal to Easterners.

SCENE: The circular vignette looks down San Francisco's iconic Market Street. It captures a bustling scene of late Victorian-era transit, featuring horse-drawn carriages, early electric streetcars, and standard pedestrians. The prominent, red Romanesque Revival skyscraper on the left corner of Market and Kearny Streets is the original Chronicle Building. Designed by the legendary architectural firm Burnham & Root and completed in 1890, it stood 218 feet tall and was celebrated as the West Coast's first steel-frame skyscraper. Further down the right side of the street, you can see the expansive facade of the original, world-famous Palace Hotel (opened in 1875). Both the historic Chronicle Building and the original Palace Hotel seen here were utterly gutted or completely destroyed a decade later during the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire.

CREATION: Finding surviving large-format color ephemeral pieces from this era is exceptionally uncommon. At 21.5"h x 15.5"w, this represents a broadsheet-sized special cover section. It was printed using multi-color chromolithography, which gave it the deep, painterly tones seen in the roses, grapes, and oranges framing the view.
