Not every ancestor figure is meant to look human, some are meant to look like the idea of a person, abstracted down to what actually matters. This carving strips the body to a stack of open, ring-like forms, each one narrowing to a waist before opening again into the next, climbing to a single carved head with a stepped, ridged crown and a long curving profile that reads almost like a beard depending on the angle you catch it. That kind of radical abstraction, reducing the human form to rhythm and repetition rather than anatomy, runs through several West African ancestor and spirit-figure carving traditions, and it's exactly what makes a piece like this read as sculpture first and artifact second.
Set on its black display stand, it holds a narrow footprint and a tall, graphic silhouette, the kind of piece that works stacked on a bookshelf end, alone on a pedestal, or grouped with other carved forms where its negative space, the open loops of the body, can actually be seen. Look at it dead-on and it reads as pattern. Move around it and it becomes a figure again.
