A screen this tall was never meant to be decorative filler, it did real architectural work. This one comes from a Chinese courtyard home, where a lattice window section like the one at the top let air and light move between rooms while still marking a clear boundary, a practical answer to the enclosed courtyard layout that shaped traditional Chinese domestic architecture for centuries. The diamond lattice is cut and joined by hand, each small opening framed by its neighbors rather than carved from a solid sheet, while the lower half closes off into solid recessed panels for privacy at eye level. Decades in place have worn the wood to a warm, uneven amber, the kind of color that only comes from age and weather rather than a stain applied last year. At just over 7 feet tall and 23 inches wide, it reads as architecture more than furniture. Lean it against a wall as a room divider, hang it as a piece of sculptural paneling, or use it exactly as it was built to be used, a screen that lets a room breathe without giving up its privacy.
