This inviting composition depicts a quintessential Old Florida cottage garden, with a pale yellow house accented by vivid turquoise shutters and roof, surrounded by abundant flowering plants and mature greenery. A brick and stone patio fills the foreground, furnished with whimsical white, yellow and turquoise garden seating. The central turquoise bench creates a particularly strong focal point and gives the painting its unmistakable Palm Beach character.
Downs employs expressive, painterly brushwork and rich areas of texture throughout the architecture, foliage and patio. His saturated turquoise, yellow, green, lavender and terracotta palette gives the scene a cheerful, almost storybook quality while retaining the charm of a traditional Florida garden painting.
Hand-signed “F. Downs” at the lower left. The painting is also identified by an applied FRANCIS DOWNS brass nameplate on the linen liner.
Beautifully presented in a substantial vintage ornate giltwood-style frame with deeply modeled floral and foliate decoration and a neutral linen liner. The elaborate frame complements the romantic garden subject and gives this relatively intimate painting excellent wall presence.
Downs was a longtime Palm Beach County resident and general contractor who devoted himself extensively to painting during retirement, maintaining his studio at Gallery One in Lake Park, Florida. See less
