Item :
A refined majolica jug, entirely wheel-shaped and hand-decorated, dating back to the mid-20th century (circa 1940s-1950s). The piece features a flattened globular body with a wide mouth and a cord handle. The decoration, entirely hand-crafted, extends in the round with a seabed motif: stylized fish, a starfish, and a jellyfish move against a dark, cloudy copper green background. The craftsmanship is exceptional: the main fish are finished with a "third-fire" metallic luster glaze featuring distinct gold and bronze highlights, while the minor fauna are depicted with a rapid, concise, modernist-inspired graphic style. Although the yellow-lined rim, corded handle, and marine theme evoke the celebrated production of the Amalfi Coast (Vietri sul Mare), known for its underwater subjects executed in red clay, a careful stylistic analysis shifts the attribution, in our opinion, toward the avant-garde workshops of Albisola (Liguria). Unlike the Vietri tradition, historically tied to glossy glazes and flat Mediterranean colors, the presence of iridescent metallic lustres on a dark, textured background, combined with a graphic style reminiscent of Futurism and Informalism, constitutes the core identity of postwar Ligurian experimentation, particularly within the circle of the master Ivos Pacetti.
