Calacatta Viola is an Italian marble quarried in the Carrara region of Tuscany, known to Renaissance Florence as Breccia Medicea, the marble of the Medici. Across a cool white ground run veins of violet, burgundy and plum, drawn with the loose confidence of brushwork rather than the regularity of geology. The oak answers in kind: solid European oak smoked to a near-black brown, its grain still legible beneath the finish, so the marble and oak read as two tones of a single warmth. These tops are cut from natural stone, and no two of these Calacatta Viola marble and oak side tables are ever quite the same.

Below the top, two solid oak boards are notched and slotted one through the other into a self-supporting cross-leg base. There is no bracket, no metal and no visible fixing, only the join itself doing the structural work.

The Calacatta Viola marble and oak side table asks little of a room and gives it a centre, at home beside a sofa or a favourite chair.
