The oak is solid European timber, smoked to a deep, near-black brown with its grain still legible beneath the darker finish. It is the more architectural of the two oak finishes, grounded and quiet. European oak was chosen for its density as much as its grain, a timber that takes the interlocking construction without reinforcement and that improves rather than dulls with use. It is a surface meant to be lived with.

Nothing about the making is concealed. Two boards of solid oak are slotted one through the other into an interlocking cross-leg base, the join shown openly as the single detail of the design.

As a smoked oak side table it settles a space rather than crowding it, at home beside a sofa or a favourite chair.
