A striking piece of American sporting décor, this sculptural deer antler trophy mount was handcrafted by artist Karl E. Hallberg under his “Night Hawk” name and dated August 12, 2001 on the original artist’s label.
A naturally shed pair of deer antlers is dramatically mounted within a beautifully fitted, hand-tooled and formed cognac leather cap, secured to a substantial shield-shaped hardwood plaque. Rather than attempting to imitate a traditional taxidermy mount, Hallberg gives the classic hunting trophy a sophisticated decorative treatment—the warm saddle leather, richly grained wood, and sculptural antlers create a handsome combination of natural materials.
The leatherwork is especially appealing, with tailored raised collars surrounding each antler and a smooth, beautifully burnished surface reminiscent of fine saddlery and traditional sporting leather goods. The shaped wooden plaque has a subtly architectural beveled edge that gives the piece a finished, furniture-quality appearance.
The reverse retains its original “Night Hawk – Artist – Karl E. Hallberg” label, dated AUG 12 – 01 and handwritten with the wonderfully appropriate inscription. A metal hanging bracket is already fitted to the reverse.
An unusual alternative to conventional taxidermy and a natural fit for a Ralph Lauren–inspired interior, English country house, Adirondack or Western lodge, gentleman’s library, den, study, bar, cabin, or collected sporting interior. It would also mix beautifully with campaign furniture, equestrian antiques, vintage leather, tartan, Navajo textiles, and rustic modern furnishings.
