A charming matched pair of vintage English Staffordshire spaniel dog figurines by William Kent, produced between 1944 and 1962. Each bears the printed Stafford knot mark reading “Staffordshire Ware, Kent, Made in England.”
Modeled after traditional Victorian mantel dogs, the opposing spaniels feature expressive hand-painted faces, sculpted coats and wonderfully restrained copper-luster decoration. Warm metallic collars, delicate chains and scattered feather-like markings punctuate the softly glazed white ceramic without overwhelming the figures’ appealing forms.
William Kent was known for continuing the historic Staffordshire pottery tradition using molds derived from 19th-century forms. Substantial in scale, this handsome pair would be equally at home flanking a mantel, arranged on a console or bringing a note of eccentric English charm to a collected interior.
