A rare settee form of the iconic "Governor Alston" pattern from Baker Furniture's Historic Charleston Reproductions collection. While the matching side chairs and armchairs appear regularly on the secondary market, the settee is seldom found.
The pattern is a benchmade reproduction of the original painted and gilt English Regency chairs once owned by Governor Robert Francis Withers Alston, second owner of the Nathaniel Russell House in Charleston, circa 1800. Produced by Baker under license from the Historic Charleston Foundation — the highest tier of American reproduction furniture of the late 20th century.
Features:
• Ebonized hardwood frame with hand-applied parcel-gilt stenciling on stiles and crest rails
• Twin chair-back design joined at the center stile, with the signature interlocking ring motif and reeded crest rails
• Original hand-woven cane seat (not pressed sheet) in dark lacquered finish
• Slender tapered legs with ringed gilt collar elements and turned feet
• Sabre-curved arms terminating in scrolled handholds
• Retains both original Baker Furniture brass plaque and Historic Charleston Reproductions brass medallion
The Governor Alston armchairs currently retail at $2,065 each through the Historic Charleston Foundation, the sole authorized Baker reseller.
