Striking antique Chinese hand-carved polychrome wood Buddhist sculpture, possibly depicting Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life.
The seated figure wears an elaborate five-lobed crown and retains evocative remnants of its original red, black, ochre and gilt-toned polychrome decoration. The crown and meditative positioning of the hands are consistent with traditional Buddhist iconography associated with representations of Amitayus.
Of particular interest is the rectangular consecration cavity carved into the back, originally intended to hold sacred or devotional materials—a characteristic found in historic Chinese Buddhist sculpture.
The extensively time-worn surface, exposed wood, age cracking and surviving layers of polychromy create a remarkable patina and strong sculptural presence. The carving and construction appear consistent with an early Chinese devotional work, possibly dating to the 18th century or earlier, although no definitive attribution or dating is claimed.
A compelling example of antique Chinese devotional sculpture with exceptional character and presence.

Significant loss, flaking and fading to the original polychrome decoration and gilt-toned details, with areas of exposed wood throughout. Numerous age-related cracks, shrinkage lines, surface abrasions and scattered losses are present, including wear and losses to the carved five-lobed crown and facial decoration. The open rectangular consecration cavity at the back is missing its original cover and any former contents. Additional cracking and wear are visible to the underside. Despite its considerable surface wear, the sculpture remains structurally intact and displays a rich, naturally aged patina. No apparent recent restoration observed. Please review all photographs carefully as they are an integral part of the condition description. less
