This is another one of a collection of miniature semi-precious and precious stone carvings we purchased from a retired professor of geology and gemology. It was his personal collection and each one is the best of the best. This frog is carved in Lapis Lazuli, a beautiful and uncommon semi-precious stone that is believed to be a healing stone that brings love.. Lapis lazuli legends are among the oldest in the world. The legend of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love, who was thought to have entered the underworld bearing the insignias of her rank, including a lapis lazuli necklace and rod, and then ascended back to the world with the same insignias. This legend dates from as early as 4,000 BCE. "In ancient Sumer," writes Scott Cunningham in his Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem, and Metal Magic, "lapis lazuli has timeless associations" with royalty and deities. People believed the stone contained "the soul of the deity, who would 'rejoice in its owner.'"
The frog is an Interesting choice as the subject matter of a lapis lazuli piece. Seems to me to remind us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Frogs in general were important to the early Egyptians. The Frog headed Egyptian goddess , Heket (Heqet), was associated with child birth and fertility.
Frogs were often embalmed upon death. There were many examples of frogs in folklore and mythology. In witchcraft frogs were frequently part of potions.
