A singular vintage Lillian August Collection leather library chair distinguished by beautifully carved exposed woodwork and a naturally developed navy-to-gray-blue ombré surface.
Originally upholstered in dark navy leather, the chair has faded over time into an atmospheric spectrum of silver-gray, smoky blue, weathered slate and surviving deep navy. Protected and recessed areas retain more of the original color, revealing the dramatic degree of transformation and creating softly blended tonal transitions that resemble a custom cloud-washed or hand-patinated finish.
The tall upholstered back provides the most expressive display of this coloration, moving from pale misty gray-blue through slate and deeper navy near the base. The padded arms and removable boxed seat cushion continue the variation, allowing the surface to read as cohesive and visually considered from every angle.
This naturally developed color story is balanced by an exceptionally handsome exposed hardwood frame in a rich, warm brown finish. Sweeping arm supports terminate in tightly carved volute scrolls with recessed line molding. A broad molded seat rail, turned front legs, brass-toned cup casters and individually applied brass nailheads complete the tailored English-inspired construction.
The chair’s compact 33-inch footprint offers the substance and comfort of a traditional leather club chair without overwhelming a room. Its upright yet generously upholstered form makes it especially well suited as a fireside reading chair, library chair, desk-side seat or statement accent in a living room, bedroom or collected study.
From a designer’s perspective, the chair combines the gravitas of traditional leather seating with a far more unusual and expressive palette. The faded blue-gray surface softens the formality of the carved frame and gives the piece relevance in both historic and contemporary interiors.
It would layer beautifully with dark wood, aged brass, natural linen, warm plaster, faded rugs, blue-and-white porcelain, equestrian artwork and antique case pieces. Its combination of dark navy, misty blue and weathered gray is particularly compelling in English Country, Ralph Lauren–inspired, Grandmillennial, traditional maximalist or old-world library settings.
The extensive fading is authentic, clearly visible and central to the chair’s present appearance. It is not represented as an original factory ombré treatment or later decorative finish. Its appeal lies in the accidental artistry of the naturally developed coloration—an unrepeatable surface that gives this traditional Lillian August chair the presence of a one-of-a-kind designer piece.
A beautifully made and remarkably distinctive chair for the collector or designer who appreciates fine construction, expressive patina and the micro-details that transform a furnishing from conventional to memorable.
MAKER INFORMATION
Established in 1988, Lillian August developed from a textile and wallcovering business into an American interiors brand recognized for layered environments combining traditional furnishings, antiques, textiles and contemporary accents.
The brand’s upholstered furniture frequently draws from English, European and American historical forms while adapting them for comfortable residential use. Leather upholstery, exposed carved wood, nailhead borders and castered front legs all belong to the sophisticated traditional vocabulary associated with Lillian August furniture.
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING
The chair is securely identified by two original Lillian August Collection labels attached beneath the frame.
The larger label documents the workshop production process through separate fields for spring-up, outside upholstery, inside upholstery, skirt, sewing, cutting, cleaning and repair, and final inspection. Multiple fields contain handwritten craftsman or inspector signoffs, and the label concludes with the statement “Made with pride by our craftsmen.”
The adjacent rectangular label displays the Lillian August Collection name and monogram.
Neither visible label provides a model name, style number, manufacturing date or secondary manufacturer. The precise model therefore remains unidentified.
The chair’s distinctive wooden chassis closely corresponds to a documented group of Lillian August chairs manufactured by Drexel Heritage around the turn of the 21st century. Shared characteristics include the tightly carved volute terminals, sweeping molded arm supports, broad lower rails, projecting front corner blocks, turned front legs with brass cup casters, straight rear legs and nailheads following the upholstery-to-frame junction.
This comparison supports a probable late-1990s–early-2000s date and a possible relationship to Drexel Heritage production. Because the chair’s own manufacturer or law tag has not been located, Drexel Heritage is treated as a research-based possibility rather than a confirmed manufacturer. The chair is therefore cataloged under its securely documented Lillian August Collection name.
The original upholstery color was dark navy, as demonstrated by the surviving protected areas of leather and confirmed through direct examination of the chair.
DESIGN DETAILS
The chair has a compact but substantial silhouette with a tall fixed upholstered back, generously padded arms and a removable boxed leather seat cushion.
The exposed hardwood arm supports rise from the front legs and sweep forward into deeply modeled volute scrolls. Recessed carved lines emphasize their curves while preserving the chair’s tailored architectural character.
Individual brass nailheads trace the inner edges of the wooden arm supports and continue around the lower upholstery. A broad molded rail visually anchors the chair.
The turned front legs terminate in brass-toned cup casters, while straight rear legs support the enclosed upholstered back. The contrast between the cool, faded leather, warm polished wood and aged brass gives the chair much of its decorative strength.
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The chair is traditionally upholstered with a fixed back, padded arms, upholstered deck and removable boxed seat cushion finished with self-welting.
The exposed hardwood chassis incorporates structural scroll-arm supports, broad molded front and side rails, turned front legs and straight rear legs. Brass-toned casters are fitted to the front legs.
The chair remains structurally stable and comfortably supportive.
MAKER’S MARKS AND LABELS
Two original Lillian August Collection labels are attached beneath the chair.
One is a multi-stage workshop inspection label with separate production fields and handwritten craftsman or inspector signoffs. The second carries the Lillian August Collection name and monogram.
The labels confirm the chair’s Lillian August Collection identification but do not provide a model name, style number, production date or secondary manufacturer.

There … moreGood vintage condition with substantial, naturally developed fading to the original dark navy leather. The leather remains intact throughout. There are no tears, cracks, punctures, peeling, missing areas or other leather damage. The upholstery seams, piping and attachment points remain secure. The removable seat cushion retains its general shape and remains comfortably supportive. The chair’s defining condition characteristic is its extensive fading. The original dark navy leather has naturally transitioned into a distinctive spectrum of silver-gray, smoky blue, weathered slate and surviving navy. The tonal variation is visible across the back, arms, cushion, sides and rear of the chair. The fading resulted from age and light exposure. It is not represented as an original factory ombré finish or a later intentional dye treatment. Natural leather grain, gentle creasing and variations in sheen are visible and consistent with a vintage leather chair. Apart from the fading and normal signs of age, no damage to the leather or chair was observed. The exposed carved hardwood frame presents beautifully and retains a warm, lustrous finish. The carved details remain crisp, and no cracks, breaks, major chips, loose joints, structural losses or repairs were observed. The brass nailheads remain intact and aligned, with age-appropriate patina and finish variation. The brass-toned front casters also retain normal patina associated with age. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the extensive color fading and naturally developed tonal variation, which are prominently disclosed and central to the chair’s present appearance. less
