Introduction
A commanding large-scale naval oil combining dramatic decorative presence with an exceptional documentary history.
Graham Jowett-Ive fills the broad composition with British and Spanish sailing warships locked in close combat. Towering masts and rigging rise across a luminous maritime sky as cannon smoke, breaking water and partially obscured vessels create a vivid sense of movement.
At approximately 109 cm wide in its recent frame, the painting makes a substantial statement piece for a library, study, entrance hall, drawing room or historically inspired interior.
Behind its visual impact lies an unusually complete archive: its original 2005 Mall Galleries exhibition label survives verso, together with the artist's handwritten correspondence and original preparatory drawing.

The Story Behind the Painting
Jowett-Ive's original exhibition title was Battle of St Vincent. Nelson’s Bridge.
The scene commemorates Nelson's extraordinary conduct during the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797.
After boarding and capturing the Spanish San Nicolás, Nelson exploited her entanglement with the much larger San Josef. His men crossed the captured ship and boarded the second Spanish vessel directly.
The feat became celebrated as “Nelson’s Patent Bridge for boarding first rates”, giving the painting its distinctive subtitle.

Visual Character
The broad horizontal format allows Jowett-Ive to create an expansive theatre of naval warfare.
A substantial British warship anchors the left of the composition while imposing Spanish vessels dominate the centre and right.
Their red-and-yellow colouring punctuates a predominantly maritime palette of blue, white and ochre.
Tall masts and intricate rigging create a dramatic architectural structure across the sky, while cannon smoke and disturbed water soften and animate the scene.
The combination of scale, colour and movement gives the painting considerable presence from across a room while rewarding closer inspection.

The surviving evidence establishes Jowett-Ive as an exhibitor with the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 2005; it does not presently establish elected membership of the Society.
Artist's Letter & Preparatory Sketch
The painting's documentary archive is unusually personal.
Jowett-Ive wrote to its original purchaser, Mr E. Joll, on 3 November 2005 after learning from the RSMA that his exhibited painting had been purchased.
He enclosed the original pencil study and expressly described it as:
“the sketch from which your painting developed…”
The drawing is therefore directly connected to the creation of this particular oil by the artist himself.

About the Artist
Graham Jowett-Ive (1946–2012) developed a particular interest in marine, naval and historical painting.
His own correspondence records lifelong sketching followed by a serious painting practice developing during the 1990s.
Following an accident that left him severely disabled, painting initially became therapeutic. He later spent considerable time in Devon, writing of his need for “a daily dose of the sea”.
In 2005, he described paintings then displayed at the Alexander Gallery in Bristol as “all celebrating the sea, or rather Nelson on the sea!”
