The dromedary is shown against an evocative Middle Eastern or North African landscape with domed architecture and palm trees, while the buffalo and bison are represented in natural settings below. The fine engraving and delicate original coloring give the animals considerable detail and character. Published in Paris in a 19th-century edition of the Histoire Naturelle associated with Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), one of the most influential naturalists of the Enlightenment. Buffon’s monumental Histoire Naturelle transformed European understanding of zoology and remained so influential that revised and illustrated editions continued to appear long after his death. The plate is headed “Mammifères,” numbered Pl. 35 and credits Vauthier as draughtsman, with Couché fils directing the engraving.
