this elegant oval sewing table dates from the french empire period, early 19th century. Crafted in solid and veneered mahogany, it is stamped chapuis on the underside of the top — an attribution to the celebrated brussels ébéniste jean-joseph chapuis (1765–1864).

the oval top rests on an apron decorated with fine lines and brass marquetry — diamonds and five-pointed stars — a motif that recurs on other documented pieces from the chapuis workshop. The slender, tapering legs, joined by an x-form stretcher, are typical of the neoclassical vocabulary of the period.
the hinged top, with its original brass hinges, lifts to reveal a star-shaped compartmentalized interior (six sections) originally designed for sewing implements — thread, needles, and small tools. Original lock (no key).
