**Description:**

A pair of antique French linen pillow covers, c. 1900, drawn from a bride's trousseau and entirely handmade — unlabeled, as trousseau pieces of this era typically were. Each cover measures approximately 30" x 25" and is worked in fine linen with an openwork lattice border — hand-drawn threadwork forming a honeycomb lattice pattern along the edges — framing a smooth center panel. One cover carries a delicate hand-embroidered monogram worked in pale blue thread.

This kind of drawn-thread and pulled-work border was standard training for a young Frenchwoman assembling her trousseau at the turn of the century — hours of patient handwork meant to show a household's linens, and a bride's skill, at their best. The weight and hand of the linen, along with the evenness and irregularity typical of hand stitching, point to genuine trousseau-quality work rather than a later machine-made reproduction.

Found at the famous Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen (Clignancourt) in Paris, long the best hunting ground in Europe for linens of this caliber.
