This very fine piece by Pauly & C., which is one of the most prestigious glass factories in Murano, represents a Goldonian gentleman (named after the famous 18th-century Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni.) He is depicted in a traditional 18th-century period dress of a wide-skirted coat (justacorps), a tricorn hat, held in his hand, and white stockings. Pauly & C. is renowned for his decorative technique, known as "Tre Fuochi" Three Flames, where 24K gold leaf and hand-painted enamel are applied to the glass in a multi-stage firing process. This lovely box is a wonderful example of such technique.

Condition: Very good. There is some slight loss of the 24K overlay around the bottom rim.
