On the Design: This weft-faced flatwoven textile features a traditional diamond-lattice medallion pattern in deep madder brown, indigo blue, and ivory, with small accents of rust-orange running through the borders. A narrow woven neck at the top — originally used to control the flow of salt as it was measured out for livestock — gives the piece its distinctive silhouette, wider at the body and cinched above. The bag is finished with long hand-plied wool tassels in rust and indigo, each capped with genuine cowrie shells, a detail traditionally carried by these nomadic groups as a symbol of protection and good fortune. The hanging cord is hand-braided from goat hair.
