Johannes van Keulen (1654–1715)
Nieuwe Paskaart van de Kust van Portugal
Amsterdam, late 17th century, circa 1690
Hand-colored copper engraving on paper.
Exceptional late 17th-century nautical chart of the Portuguese Atlantic coast, published in Amsterdam by the celebrated Dutch cartographer and maritime publisher Johannes van Keulen.
The chart depicts the coast of Portugal, from north of Cabo da Roca to Cabo de São Vicente, with Lisbon, Setúbal and numerous coastal locations represented in remarkable detail. The sea is crossed by an elaborate network of rhumb lines and compass roses, characteristic of early navigational charts.
The composition is particularly decorative, featuring a sailing ship, an elaborate allegorical title cartouche with mythological figures, and a second cartouche supported by a winged putto bearing the publisher’s name:
“t’Amsterdam by Johannis van Keulen, Boekverkooper aan de Nieuwebrugh inde Gekroonde Lootsman.”
The chart features old hand coloring in shades of turquoise, blue, green, pink, red and yellow.
It was originally published as a double-page chart in one of Johannes van Keulen’s celebrated maritime atlases. The two sheets are joined at the center with a remarkably discreet and precise junction.
The engraved area measures approximately 58 × 51 cm (22.8 × 20.1 in.), corresponding closely to documented institutional examples of this chart. The number 28 appears in the lower right corner.
The verso is particularly interesting and preserves several old handwritten annotations in French. A further old manuscript inscription appears to read “10 Frimaire,” Frimaire being one of the months of the French Republican calendar, officially used in France from 1793 until its abolition on January 1, 1806. These inscriptions provide fascinating evidence of the chart’s later history and provenance.
An authentic early maritime document combining significant cartographic, historical and decorative interest.
