This mid-century painting depicts a tranquil Mediterranean setting with a descending series of weathered stone steps and masonry blocks that lead the viewer's eye upward towards to the right, a terraced stone embankment, covered with dry grasses and sparse vegetation and to the left, several tall, dark cypress trees punctuate the landscape, creating strong vertical elements against a pale, hazy sky. The color palette consists primarily of muted earth tones, including warm beige, sandstone, soft taupe, pale ochre, dusty sage green, light gray, and cream, accented by the deep blue-green silhouettes of the cypress trees. The painting is signed and dated "Ferguson 54" in the lower right corner (or a similar variation of name as the script is hard to decipher). The painting is housed in a period wooden frame and linen-lined matting. See less
