This tripod pedestal table, born in a parisian workshop in the last third of the 18th century, bears the mark of a cabinetmaker of considerable stature: pierre denizot, who became a master in 1740, was the official supplier to the count of artois and commissioned pieces for the châteaux of saint-germain-en-laye and maisons-laffitte. His works now reside in the collections of the musée jacquemart-andré, the musée cognacq-jay, the musée des arts décoratifs in lyon, and the victoria and albert museum in london—a cabinetmaker rarely found in the pure louis xvi style, the majority of his production reflecting the louis xv and transitional styles.

on this pedestal table, everything is light and airy. The tabletop, made of white marble veined with gray, is encircled by an openwork brass gallery of almost ethereal delicacy—a play of shadows and voids that captures light from every angle. Below, three curved mahogany supports rise from a circular stretcher shelf, resting on small bronze feet sculpted in the shape of animal paws, the only slightly theatrical touch in an otherwise restrained piece.
