A beautifully aged Rococo-style giltwood mirror, carved in high relief with flowing acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and a foliate crest rising above the mirror plate. The gilding has worn beautifully with time — soft golden tones give way to red bole and bare wood at the high points, giving the piece wonderful depth and an authentically aged patina rather than a uniform shine.
The mirror glass itself shows age-appropriate foxing and desilvering throughout, adding to the antique character. The back retains its original wood backing, including fragments of old French-language newsprint used as lining — a lovely detail for anyone who appreciates original, unrestored construction.
A striking statement piece for an entryway, above a mantel, or grouped with other gilt mirrors on a gallery wall.
