moreHand-picked to display (and also to read), this lovely set of five antique green & gold books from popular authors of their era. The set of hardcovers, published from 1895 - 1911, includes works by famed authors, Washington Irvin, Bret Harte, Robert Louis Stevenson, and James Whitcomb Riley (illustrated by equally famous artist,Howard Chandler Christy). The least-familiar author in this lot is F. Hopkinson Smith, who wrote 'The Fortunes of Oliver Horn' and numerous other popular books. Perhaps, he is more well-known as a painter and an architect, who built the foundation for The Statue of Liberty, and other landmarks.
The books are 'Wolfert's Roost' by Washington Irving, 1895 (481 pp). 'An Old Sweetheart of Mine' by James Whitcomb Riley, Illust. by Howard Chandler Christy, 1902 (unpaginated). 'Tales of the Argonauts' by Bret Harte, 1903 (494 pp)., 'The Wrecker' by Robert Louis Stevenson, 1907 (553 pp), and 'The Fortunes of Oliver Stone' by F. Hopkinson Smith, 1911 (552 pp). The books are all illustrated - some with prints under tissue.
The books are in good condition for their age, with some minor wear to the covers, along edges. The Riley/Chandler book has some wear to the cover pastedown. Inside the books, there is some very light aging to the pages - but no foxing, age spots or tears. It is often difficult to find antique books in condition as good as these. less
