Striking 1960s modernist figural bust attributed to American sculptor Barbara Cranford. The substantial plaster sculpture features an elongated form and heavily modeled, expressive surface, finished in a layered verdigris-style patina of green, gray, cream, and earthy tones that gives it the character of aged bronze.
The underside retains its original **Cranford Galleries label, 714 N. Wells St., Chicago**, providing compelling period Chicago provenance. Its rough, tactile surface and simplified features give the work a distinctly modernist character with Brutalist influence.
Barbara Cranford was an American sculptor with roots in Chicago, where she studied sculpture with noted sculptor Simon Gordon. She went on to exhibit figurative sculpture and drawings and later continued her artistic career in Wisconsin. Her work included clay reliefs, freestanding torsos, and figurative sculpture, with examples exhibited in juried Midwestern shows and held in a public collection.
A distinctive piece of mid-century studio sculpture with wonderful texture, presence, and Chicago art-world provenance.
