A rare matched pair of sculptural alabaster “flame” table lamps attributed to Maurizio Tempestini for Lightolier, circa 1951.
Each lamp is carved from pale translucent alabaster in an expressive openwork flame form, with natural gray, charcoal and warm cream veining throughout. The sculptural bodies rise from contrasting black oval bases and retain their period white socket/shade-holder assemblies. One lamp retains a partial original Lightolier / Underwriters Laboratories label on the socket housing.
Tempestini designed a group of alabaster lighting for Lightolier in the early 1950s, with the forms carved in Volterra, Italy and assembled for the American market. These dramatic curling-flame forms are among the most distinctive examples associated with the series.
The lamps are especially beautiful as a pair, with subtle differences in the natural stone coloration and veining giving each its own character while retaining a strong matched appearance.
Both lamps are currently functional and illuminate as shown. The electrical components and cords appear to be vintage/original and have not been professionally rewired by the current owner. Because of their age, buyers may wish to have the wiring inspected or updated for regular use.
Shades are not included. The existing socket assemblies are designed to accommodate fitter-style shades or may be adapted by a lighting professional depending upon the buyer’s preferred shade treatment.
A wonderful pair for a Mid-Century Modern, Hollywood Regency, Italian Modern or collected contemporary interior.
