Antique French print after celebrated artist Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761–1845), titled Le Baume d’Acier, depicting a wonderfully theatrical tooth-extraction scene. Known for his keen observations of everyday life and human expression, Boilly produced humorous and satirical compositions that captured French society of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
In this memorable composition, a distressed patient is restrained while a tooth is dramatically extracted—a striking example of the fascination with medical and dental subjects in period caricature. The French title Le Baume d’Acier (“The Steel Balm”) adds to the wonderfully dark humor of the scene.
Printed on Arches paper, with a visible watermark in the lower margin. Presented under glass in its vintage black and gilt-accented frame. The original-style backing remains intact and bears a J. Pratt & Sons (Derby) Limited label identifying the firm as fine art dealers, picture framers, and artists’ colourmen, established in 1887.
An unusual and highly decorative piece for a collection of French prints, medical or dental history, European caricature, or an eclectic gallery wall.
