Each … Read more Antique pair of highly decorative E. & J. Bass candlesticks featuring richly embossed Dutch-inspired scenes and elaborate scrolling ornamentation. Each tall, architectural candlestick displays an array of pictorial motifs including windmills, traditionally dressed figures, sailing vessels, animals, and floral and foliate scrollwork.
The unusual faceted forms rise from broad polygonal bases to slender tapered stems and dramatically flared candle cups, creating an especially sculptural silhouette. The deeply modeled decoration extends around the candlesticks, allowing different scenes and details to be appreciated from every angle.
Both pieces retain a warm, richly aged bronze-gold appearance with darkened recesses that beautifully emphasize the intricate relief decoration. The undersides are impressed “E. & J.B. / DES. PAT. APPL’D.,” identifying the maker as E. & J. Bass of New York and indicating that a design patent had been applied for.
A striking early 20th-century American decorative pair with strong Dutch Revival character, equally suited to a mantel, console, dining table, library, or collected traditional interior. Sold as a pair.
