A large late 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain charger dating to the Meiji period, circa 1890.

The charger has a shallow fluted border and elegant scalloped rim, densely hand-painted in the traditional Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, soft green and gilt.

The central reserve is decorated with chrysanthemums and other flowering plants, surrounded by richly patterned floral panels. Two opposing reserves feature birds amongst flowering branches, adding movement to the highly decorative composition.

The decoration combines underglaze cobalt blue with finely painted overglaze enamels and gilded highlights. The reverse is traditionally decorated in underglaze blue, with an unglazed foot rim and firing marks visible to the underside. The porcelain body has a characteristic subtle blue-white tint.

Typically unmarked.

A particularly decorative example with strong colour and an intricate, almost textile-like composition. Its generous 31 cm scale makes it ideal for display on a wall, stand, console or as part of a collection of Japanese ceramics.
