The design is recorded as aragon, model 846, an elusive decor from the factory’s more experimental production of the 1920s. Molded in earthenware, the tray takes a broad shield-shaped form framed by a gently undulating raised rim. The decoration radiates from the center in interlocking geometric fields of terracotta red, black, cobalt blue, pale green, lavender, and ochre. Hand-painted linear details and subtle textural embossing give the pattern depth and definition, while the matte finish softens the palette and emphasizes the contrast between the individual forms. Particularly interesting is the aragon decor itself, which appears to have been produced in very limited numbers and whose authorship remains somewhat enigmatic. The design is attributed to jaap gidding, an important figure in dutch art deco whose work encompassed ceramics, glass, textiles, interiors, and architectural decoration. His association with zuid-holland during the mid-1920s places the piece within a particularly inventive period of the factory’s production. The underside retains its hand-painted markings, including the aragon name, model number 846, date code, maker’s markings, and “made in holland.” the tray remains in good original condition, with light surface wear and two small edge chips consistent with age and use.
