A stunning pair of polychrome wood panels depicting mock book spines, creating a trompe l'oeil library effect. These panels originated in England in the mid-19th century.
The panels feature distressed and aged tones of beige and olive green in the faux architectural structure, which contrasts with the gold and red lines that outline it. The panels are divided into multiple shelves filled with faux parchment book spines in beige and leather tones, embellished with ribbed details that create a theatrical effect with great realism.
The lower left section of the largest panel frames an antique mirror in a semicircular arch, accentuating the trompe l'oeil effect of depth. The ensemble emulates a real library; the simple classical capitals and the prominent moldings of the upper cornice and lower base accentuate the optical effect of opulence and elegance.
