Tobias Cohen’s invention was a "bridge" technology. For the newly arrived immigrant, the ritual of lighting oil wicks was a deep connection to ancestry. However, the American market was moving toward the cleanliness and convenience of wax candles.

Cohen’s solution was brilliant. As detailed in U.S. Patent No. 930,592, his mechanical assembly was specifically engineered to allow for the use of either traditional oil or modern candles. Included in this archive are both variations:

The Dual-Use Masterpiece: Featuring the exceptionally rare, patented fluted oil pans and candle sockets.

The Production Model: The candle-only variation that shows how the design was streamlined for the rapidly modernizing American Jewish household.

The backplate (covered under Patent No. 930,837) is intricately embossed with the traditional Menorah and the Hanukkah liturgy: "Ha-nerot hallalu kodesh hem" ("These candles are holy"). Both lamps bear the original factory stamp on the base: "PAT. AUG. 10, 1909."
