Antique large-format “Four by Honours” color print after celebrated British canine artist Maud Earl (1863–1943), dated 1901.
The composition depicts four Rough Collies gathered in profile against a softly rendered landscape. Earl became particularly celebrated for her portraits of pedigreed and sporting dogs, and her work remains especially appealing in traditional, English country and sporting interiors.
The print retains its period publication inscription along the upper margin identifying Henry Graves & Co. Ltd., 6 Pall Mall, London, with additional publication information for Stiefbold & Co., Berlin and The J. Hood Co., Montreal, and a U.S.A. copyright notice.
The work is presented beneath glass with layered neutral matting in a substantial warm wood frame accented by a narrow gold-toned inner border. Its generous scale gives the piece considerable presence while the muted blue, cream, brown and green palette makes it particularly easy to incorporate into an established interior.
