A captivating pair of antique 19th-century hand-painted porcelain plaques, each depicting an idyllic pastoral scene with the wonderfully romantic character associated with Victorian-era decorative art. Painted directly onto solid porcelain, these substantial plaques possess a luminous quality that beautifully enhances their delicate colors and atmospheric landscapes.
The first plaque presents a tranquil country landscape, with towering trees framing a reflective pond, rolling green fields, distant cottages, and diminutive figures incorporated into the scenery. Its softly rendered background gradually gives way to richer detail in the foreground, creating an appealing sense of depth and serenity.
Its companion depicts a charming rural genre scene, portraying a family resting along a country road. A gentleman carrying a bundle stands alongside seated and standing figures, all surrounded by trees, rocky terrain, and distant architecture. The beautifully observed costumes and small narrative details give the scene considerable character.
Each framed plaque measures approximately 12.5 inches wide, 10.5 inches high and 1 inch deep. Each plaque weighs approximately 3 pounds. Both paintings feature a delicate, almost ethereal palette of soft greens, warm earth tones, and subtle pastels, allowing the natural white porcelain to contribute luminosity to the compositions. The plaques are presented in complementary period-style gilt frames, whose naturally aged surfaces beautifully complement the paintings. Each has small areas of detail loss with blobs of color that blend in well, but close inspection will show loss of finer detail. The frames have small area of gilt loss. One plaque has a written presentation on the bottom but it is difficult to read. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Together, the two works form an especially decorative matched pair of Victorian pastoral scenes, ideal for a traditional interior, English Country setting, library, study, or gallery wall. They are particularly attractive displayed side-by-side or vertically as a pair.
A beautiful opportunity to acquire a substantial pair of 19th-century hand-painted porcelain artwork, combining fine decorative painting, romantic rural subject matter, and wonderful Old World character.
