An impressive large-format 1843 British etching, The Waterloo Heroes Assembled at Apsley House, after the painting by British artist John … Read more An impressive large-format 1843 British etching, The Waterloo Heroes Assembled at Apsley House, after the painting by British artist John Prescott Knight (1803–1881) and etched by noted engraver Charles George Lewis (1808–1880).

The composition portrays the Duke of Wellington surrounded by distinguished officers associated with the Battle of Waterloo, assembled at Apsley House, Wellington’s London residence. The exceptionally detailed scene includes numerous individually rendered portraits, elaborate military uniforms, medals and ceremonial dress.

The lower margin retains its original period inscriptions, including “Etched by Chas. G. Lewis,” the 1843 publication date, and the imprint of Graves & Warmsley, London, whose publication line identifies the firm as “Printsellers to Her Majesty & H.R.H. Prince Albert.”

This is the 1843 Graves & Warmsley issue, rather than one of the later mid-1840s editions of the image.

Presented under glass in a substantial figured-wood frame with broad molding and gilt inner and outer detailing. Measuring approximately 45 3/8” wide × 33 1/2” high, the work has excellent scale and wall presence while retaining remarkable fine detail throughout the portraits and military dress.

An evocative piece of early Victorian British military and social history, especially well suited to a library, study, traditional living room, English-inspired interior or collection devoted to the Napoleonic era and Battle of Waterloo.
