An exquisite vintage Chinese rectangular hardwood box, crafted from dense, dark Purple Sandalwood (Zitan). The lid features masterful, deep-relief carving over a meticulously detailed "brocade" (diamond lattice) background.
The main motif depicts a bird perched among lush peonies, chrysanthemums, and bamboo, symbolizing "Brocade and Flowers" (Jinshang Tianhua), a traditional auspicious phrase meaning "good fortune upon good fortune" or "adding beauty to beauty."
The wood is very heavy and dark, featuring a natural, rich patina. This piece is perfect for storing documents, letters, jewelry, or as a striking display chest for an antique desk or shelf.
