An exceptionally charming and intimate oil painting by British artist Raoul Millais (1901–1999), depicting an elegant gathering beside a tranquil lake. Although Millais is best known for his equestrian, sporting, and animal subjects, this delightful composition reveals another aspect of his work: a romantic and highly painterly interpretation of the European fête galante tradition.The scene evokes the leisurely elegance of an earlier age. Hesketh Raoul Lejarderay Millais (1901–1999), commonly known as Raoul Millais, was a distinguished British painter, draughtsman, illustrator and sportsman, best known for his equestrian, sporting and animal subjects. Working across nearly the entire 20th century, Millais developed a highly personal form of representational painting grounded in accomplished draftsmanship, firsthand observation and an intimate knowledge of horses, animals and British country life.Millais was born into one of Britain's most celebrated artistic families. His grandfather was Sir John Everett Millais (1829–1896), the renowned Victorian painter and co-founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, while his father, John Guille Millais (1865–1931), was a noted naturalist, explorer, author and wildlife artist. This remarkable heritage exposed Raoul from an early age to both serious artistic practice and the close study of animals and the natural world.He trained at the Byam Shaw School of Art and subsequently at the Royal Academy Schools in London. As a young man he also accompanied his father on expeditions in Africa, producing studies of wildlife and developing the acute powers of observation that would become central to his mature work. After returning to England, Millais established himself as an equestrian portraitist and became closely associated with the world of hunting, horse racing and British sporting society. His understanding of horses was not merely academic: he was himself an accomplished horseman and sportsman, allowing him to portray animals with unusual anatomical accuracy, movement and individual character.During his long career, Millais's subjects extended well beyond formal equestrian portraiture. He painted racing and hunting scenes, wildlife, landscapes, society figures and atmospheric scenes of leisure, often employing a freer and more impressionistic handling in his smaller compositions. Following the Second World War, Spain also became an important source of inspiration, particularly its horses, bulls and bullfighting culture. Millais was acquainted with Ernest Hemingway, with whom he shared an enthusiasm for Spain and the corrida.Although resolutely committed to figurative painting during an era increasingly dominated by Modernism and abstraction, Millais's technique could be remarkably spontaneous. His more intimate works are characterized by fluid brushwork, economical touches of color and an ability to suggest figures, animals and landscape with considerable freshness and immediacy.
