Rather than a painting, it is a traditional Japanese bridal textile created using a specialized hand-painted, rice-paste resist-dyeing technique called tsutsugaki. This specific design shows an elaborate pattern of two mythical phoenixes (hō-ō) - a larger male in mid-flight preparing to join a smaller female perched on the branch of a Paulownia (kiri) tree. In traditional East Asian culture, the pairing of the phoenix with the Paulownia tree serves as a popular auspicious symbol for peace, sincerity, benevolence, and marital harmony.
A similar original piece is held at The Art Institute of Chicago.
