Both are impressed with … Read more Wonderful vintage pair of hand-thrown pottery candlesticks by renowned North Carolina potter Ben Owen Sr. (1904–1983). Both are impressed with the circular “Ben Owen Master Potter” studio mark used at Old Plank Road Pottery in Seagrove, North Carolina, from approximately 1960 to 1972.

The tall sculptural form features a broad flared base, slender column, deep drip bowl and raised candle cup. Both are finished in a warm tobacco-spit orange-brown glaze with attractive firing variation, speckling and extensive age-related crazing.

Each candlestick measures approximately 9 inches tall with a 4.25-inch-diameter base. The mouth of the candle cup measures approximately 1.8 inches across and narrows internally to support a traditional taper candle. Because both the holders and candles can vary slightly in size, candle-fitting wax or adhesive may be needed for the most secure fit.

The pair displays beautifully but does show age and use. One candlestick has a visible chip/loss along the upper rim of its candle cup. Both have overall glaze crazing, scattered glaze wear, firing irregularities and handmade variations. No structural cracks were observed. Please review all photographs closely for the most complete representation of condition.
