Each … Read more A wonderfully characterful matched pair of early American Hubley Manufacturing Company No. 497 cast-iron accordion player bookends, circa 1920s–1930s.

Each substantial figure depicts a seated musician in a cap playing an accordion. Both castings are marked on the reverse “MADE IN U.S.A. 497.”

The aged bronze-tone surfaces have developed beautiful green patination within the recessed areas of the accordion, clothing and figure. Rather than being polished or refinished, this historic surface has intentionally been preserved.

Especially appealing are the individually shaped polished banded onyx/calcite stone bases. Their natural burgundy, amber, cream and olive coloration gives each piece a distinctive appearance. As expected with individually shaped natural stone, the bases vary in thickness and contour, with one slightly taller and heavier than its mate.

The two matching musicians face the same direction rather than being mirrored, consistent with documented examples of Hubley’s No. 497 bookend pair.

At just over 10 pounds combined, these are genuinely substantial decorative objects with excellent presence. Beautiful flanking a collection of books in a library or study, they are equally appealing displayed as a pair of early American figural sculptures on a desk, console or mantel.

An especially handsome find for a traditional library, gentleman’s study, music room or collection of early American cast iron.
