This hand-decorated American ceramic … Read more A wonderfully whimsical vintage blue-and-white crackleware snowman figurine, attributed to The Potting Shed and dated 1984. This hand-decorated American ceramic figure captures the beloved blue-and-white look associated with New England’s Dedham-inspired pottery: a creamy white ground with a fine intentional crackle glaze, richly painted cobalt and navy-blue accents, and a cheerful sculptural form.

The snowman is dressed in a dramatic brimmed hat adorned with dimensional blue flowers, a striped scarf, blue mittens, and a charming painted vest. He holds a cobalt-blue fan and features a dark blue vertical accessory at his side. The hand-painted decoration, varied brushwork, and allover crazed-glaze finish give the piece exceptional handmade character.

The underside bears a blue painted mark that appears to read “KH*02 USA H84”; this is believed to indicate American production in 1984 and supports the Potting Shed-era attribution.

The Potting Shed produced Dedham-inspired ceramic ware in the 1980s, including hand-decorated pieces with intentional crackle glaze and cobalt-blue decoration; this snowman is an especially charming seasonal example.
