Vintage Turkish Oushak prayer rug. Hand-knotted in Anatolia in hand-spun wool. Hand-Spun Wool on a Cotton Foundation Hand-Knotted Prayer Niche Village Rug.

The prayer rug, or namazlik, is the most personal format in Anatolian weaving — woven with a niche pointing the way to Mecca and kept for one person's use. This one carries three columnar niches side by side, each crowned with a mosque lamp and a spray of finials. The field is left deliberately plain so the arches carry the whole design. Collectors also file this type under Kayseri, Anatolian namazlik and Turkish village rug.

The ground is a soft wheat gold, faded unevenly by decades of light into the muted, chalky surface that cannot be reproduced. Two arches in deep green flank a central one in madder, with touches of blue and rose. The navy main border runs a fine carnation and rosette vine in green, rose and ivory. Low, even pile throughout.

Condition: good vintage. Pile worn low across the field with light knot definition showing through — honest age, not damage. Original selvedges, original fringe. No holes, no repairs, no stains, no odour. Sound and fully usable.

Measures 3 ft 1 in wide by 4 ft 8 in long (37 x 56 in).

Sized for an entry, a study, a bathroom, beside a bed, or layered over a larger rug. The plain field and faded palette suit a modern room where a busy rug would fight the furniture. Also frames well as wall art.
