Vintage Turkish Oushak small rug. Hand-knotted in Anatolia in hand-spun wool. Hand-Spun Wool on a Wool Foundation Hand-Knotted Medallion Village Rug.

Small Anatolian village rugs like this were woven for the home rather than the market — as a mat, a cushion face, or a seat by the door. The drawing is a stepped hexagonal medallion with hooked finials top and bottom, framed by panelled ends. Collectors also file this type under Anatolian yastik, Kirsehir and Konya.

The field is a soft dove grey, worn to an even low pile that gives it the muted, chalky surface only age produces. The medallion is saffron gold with an ivory geometric centre in teal, walnut and gold. Deep brown end panels carry a row of small stylised carnations, and the guard borders run gold and teal on ivory. The brown has oxidised very slightly below the surrounding pile, which is a hallmark of genuine age in Anatolian weaving.

Condition: good vintage. Even low pile consistent with age and use, original selvedges, original fringe. No holes, no repairs, no stains, no odour. Sound and usable.

Measures 1 ft 7 in wide by 3 ft 3 in long (19 x 39 in).

Sized for a doorway, a kitchen sink, a bathroom, beside a bed, or layered over a larger rug. Also frames well as wall art. Works with boho, eclectic, farmhouse and modern interiors.
