An irresistibly charming collection of vintage European duck ceramics, pairing an SMF Schramberg children’s plate from Germany with a whimsical pair of ceramic duck salt and pepper shakers made in England.
The 7-inch Schramberg plate is finished in a warm primrose yellow with rust-colored banding and a wonderfully graphic central scene of a strolling duck family. One adult duck appears jauntily dressed in a hat and jacket, giving the piece the playful storybook character associated with European children’s tableware of the period.
The accompanying English salt and pepper shakers could hardly be better companions. One is an upright duck wearing a plum-colored hat, complete with eyelashes, yellow wings and a small painted flower; the second is a plump, more naturalistic duck decorated with brown feather accents. One retains an ENGLAND mark to the underside.
Although produced separately in Germany and England and not an original manufactured set, the pieces share such a wonderfully similar palette and character that we’ve brought them together as a curated collection. Displayed together, the three pieces have the feeling of a small European folk-art vignette.
A delightful addition to a collected kitchen, cottage or country interior, children’s room, plate shelf, spring display, or collection of antique and vintage bird ceramics.
