This impressive Chinese settee is distinguished by its extraordinary hand-carved decoration and three large natural stone panels inset into the back. The highly figured white and gray Dali marble, often referred to as “dreamstone,” displays natural mineral patterns reminiscent of misty mountains and traditional Chinese landscape painting.

The substantial hardwood frame is profusely carved in high relief with dragons, mythical creatures, scrolling clouds, foliage and traditional auspicious motifs. Elaborate pierced carving continues throughout the crest, arms, apron and legs, giving the piece an unusually sculptural presence from every angle.

At approximately 66 inches wide, the settee provides comfortable seating for three while functioning equally well as a statement piece in a formal living room, entry hall, library, study or collected interior.

The wood is a dense, richly colored Chinese hardwood with an aged reddish-brown finish. The exact species has not been professionally identified; it appears consistent with the rosewood/hongmu family of Chinese hardwoods, but is being offered without a definitive species attribution.
