Bidjar is the Kurdish weave of northwest Persia and the most substantial rug in the Persian tradition — dense in the hand, and drawn at a scale no city workshop attempts. Its signature is the great palmette flanked by long serrated leaves, thrown out from a small central medallion across a field left open rather than crowded. Collectors also file this drawing under Halvai Bidjar, Sultanabad and Persian all-over floral.

The field here is a clear light blue, with a small camel and ivory medallion at the centre carrying a grid of tiny rosettes. Around it, large serrated palmettes and jagged leaves in madder, sage green, rose and indigo spread on a fine red vine, with enough blue left visible between them for the design to breathe. The wide madder main border carries paired palmettes and split leaves, framed by narrow sage guards. Even knotting, crisp outlines, wool with a strong natural sheen.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 9 ft 1 in wide by 11 ft 10 in long (109 x 142 in).

A 9 x 12 room-size rug. Anchors a living room with all furniture on the rug, or a dining table seating eight to ten. The blue ground reads cool and light in a room where a rust rug would feel heavy. Works with traditional, English country, coastal and transitional interiors. Reversible for even wear.
