Ferahan is the fine end of the Arak weaving country and the quiet aristocrat of Persian design. Where Sultanabad opens the field out, Ferahan fills it: a small-scale floral repeat carried on a continuous curving vine, drawn tightly and evenly across a dark ground, framed by a single wide border. Collectors also file this drawing under Sarouk, Mahal and Persian all-over floral.

The field here is deep indigo, almost black at the edges, worked with mirrored rows of palmettes, rosettes and long curving saz leaves in rose, soft blue, sage and ivory. The wide madder-red main border carries a delicate flowering vine with small birds worked into it, between narrow ivory guards. The knotting is fine and the outlines stay crisp at small scale, which is what separates a Ferahan from a village weave.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 8 ft 2 in wide by 9 ft 11 in long (98 x 119 in).

An 8 x 10 room-size rug. Anchors a living room with all furniture on the rug, or a dining table seating eight. The dark ground hides traffic and makes a formal room feel settled. Works with traditional, English country, transitional and modern interiors. Reversible for even wear.
