The Gabbeh is the storytelling rug of the Qashqai and Luri nomads of the Zagros mountains. The weaver puts down what she can see: hills rising one behind another, a row of trees along each ridge, and the flocks and wild animals moving between them. Nothing is drawn from a cartoon, so no two are alike and the drawing stays naive and alive. Collectors also file this under Shiraz, Qashqai and Persian pictorial.

Four bands carry the landscape here: slate blue, soft teal, warm cream and deep green, each divided by a hand-drawn ridge line. Ten tall trees stand along the top in madder, saffron, indigo and sage, each with a different canopy. Below them, several hundred small animals — goats, deer, dogs, horses, partridges and peacocks — scattered across the hills, no two the same colour. The wool has a strong natural sheen and the abrash in each band gives real depth.

Condition: excellent. Even pile, original selvedges, original hand-tied fringe. No repairs, no stains, no odour.

Measures 5 ft 0 in wide by 7 ft 0 in long (60 x 84 in).

Sized for a seating area under a coffee table, a bedroom, a nursery or a study. Also hangs beautifully as wall art. Works with boho, eclectic, farmhouse, Southwestern and modern interiors. Reversible for even wear.
